4 Percent – 7 Steps to Success In Life – Step 7: Practice Gratitude to Receive Abundance

For many expressing gratitude seems to be a very difficult proposition. A simple “Thank You” is all that is needed to express your gratitude. It is perhaps one of the greatest expressions of humbleness and defines your own attitude to life. Always express your gratitude graciously, it will make you stand out from the crowd.

Step 7: Practice Gratitude to Receive Abundance

 Hi friends, welcome back.

In the last few weeks, we’ve seen a lot of each other. Through a series of blogs, I’ve shared several tips on being happy and prosperous. This has all been a part of what I like to call the 7 Steps to Success in Life. Today, we’re covering the final step – the importance of practicing gratitude.

From the time we wake up to the time we go to bed, we all have some things we can be grateful for. But, we’re so badly caught up in our needs and wants and desires that very rarely do we think of pausing this mad dash and be grateful for all that we have in our lives.

When Did You Express Your Gratitude?

Ask yourself – when was the last time you thanked the universe for the food on your table or the set of good friends you have or the kindness of a stranger or the help that was extended by a family member? Can’t remember, can you?

In her book The Gifts of Imperfection, Brenè Brown writes, “Without exception, every person I interviewed who described living a joyful life or who described themselves as joyful, actively practiced gratitude and attributed their joyfulness to their gratitude practice. And both joy and gratitude were described as spiritual practices that were bound to a belief in human interconnectedness and a power greater than us.

I repeat what she said – “… every person I interviewed who described living a joyful life … actively practiced gratitude”

 Could that be a coincidence?

In a study published in Personality and Individual Differences in 2012, grateful people reported fewer aches and pains and declared themselves healthier than other people. Robert A. Emmons, Ph.D. – a leading gratitude researcher – also added that the multiple studies he’d conducted found a link between well being and gratitude. It also helped fight negative emotions, like envy, resentment, regret, and frustration to increase happiness and reduce depression.

Could that be a coincidence?

No, this isn’t a coincidence, just a reaffirmation of what people have known for centuries: If you cultivate an attitude of thankfulness for all that you have and all that you’ve achieved, you’re creating positive vibes in your life. Not only do you nurture inner peace this way, you also send out good energy into the universe, which attracts more positivity and brings it back to you, sometimes tenfold.

Practice Gratitude

A lot of people might dismiss this as a pop psychology trend, but I always think of gratitude as a magnet for abundance. And here are some ways in which I practice thankfulness every day in my life.

  1. Start the day right: Put yourself in the right frame of mind every morning by acknowledging all the things you’re grateful for.
  2. Enjoy the smallest thing you do, such as ordering your favorite cup of coffee or reading a book you like a lot.
  3. Look at yourself in the mirror and congratulate yourself on your hard work.
  4. Think of all the people who’re serving you – the barista, your house help, the banker, your neighborhood grocer. Now go up to them, ask them their name and thank them for all the value they’re adding in your life.
  5. Write a letter of gratitude to someone whose contributed immensely in your life. It could be a teacher, a mentor, your best friend of 25 years or a helpful coworker. Just write them a heartfelt letter and thank them for all they’ve done for you.

These are just some of the small things I do to continue the circle of gratitude in my life. And from personal experience I can say that they’ve always worked for me.

In the end, I will leave you with this thought – Cultivate a sense of gratitude in your life. It’s a sure shot way of attracting happiness and prosperity. That’s why I count it among the 7 Steps to Success in life.
