4 Percent – Seven Steps To Results In Life – Step 2: Set Your Goals & Be Specific About What You Want

The success of any task or assignment can only be measured against well-established and defined goals. These goals have to be within the parameters of measurable or comparable scales. Vague goals or objectives will only help the failure to embrace the person trying to achieve them. Read on how to succeed in your mission.

Step 2: Set Your Goals & Be Specific About What You Want

In my previous blog, I had shared the first of the 7 steps to results, which was to take responsibility for your life.

How many people have you met who go through life feeling weak and disabled, who believe that they have no control over anything. To my mind, the first of the 7 steps to prosperity involves becoming the masters of our own destiny. This means saying goodbye to feelings of helplessness, to assigning blame to one thing or another or to believing that nothing will ever change. If we hope to be prosperous in life, it’s important to set aside these negative thoughts, and tell ourselves firmly that we control what happens in our lives.

Once we take responsibility for our own fate, it’s time to move on to the second of the 7 steps to results that will change your life forever: Setting goals and being specific about what you want.

Setting goals? Is that it? But I already have a goal: I want to be successful.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but that’s not what you call setting goals. If you say things like ‘I want to move ahead in life’ or ‘I want to be famous’, I wouldn’t call it a goal. It’s a desire – something intangible that’s hanging in the air and anchored to nothing tangible.

Goals are more concrete in nature. More importantly, they are SMART, which means they are

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Attainable
  • Relevant
  • Time bound

Let me give you an example: ‘I want to be rich’ is not a goal. It’s too vague to be a goal, and vague aspirations are only going to lead to vague results. On the other hand, ‘I am going to boost my profit margin by 2% before the end of the fiscal year 2017-2018’ is a more realistic goal. You’re specific about what you want, you’ve got measurable parameters, the goal is both relevant and attainable, and you’ve mentioned a time period in which you want to achieve the goal. Now, that right there is what I would call a SMART goal!

Here are some reasons why setting goals ranks high among the 7 steps to success.

  1. Goals help you take control of your life. And if you remember, I stressed on the importance of doing just that in my previous article, which you can read here.
  2. They give you clarity about your future.
  3. They help you focus. They funnel your time and energy to achieve the best results.
  4. Goals hold you accountable for any setbacks and failure.
  5. They act as a source of motivation and propel you forward.
  6. They also keep you wavering from the path you’ve chosen for yourself.

I hope now you understand how important goal setting is to achieve a better and more prosperous life.

In my line of work, I have to set critical goals day in and day out. The success of my project depends on it. After years of hit and trial, I’ve managed to find a technique that helps me set powerful goals. It’s simple, yet effective, and I can personally vouch for its success.

Here’s what I do: I write my goals down.

Write your goals down? That’s it? That’s your secret to success?

Yes, it is. A written goal is a tangible goal. Anything else is not. Writing down your goals makes you a creator and once you’ve written them down, you are unlikely to forget them. Since I am old fashioned, I write my goals on a piece of paper. You new age tech-savvy people can use an app, or whatever other tool catches your fancy. The bottom line is: write the goal down and display it somewhere you can see it every day.

There are other aspects that are critical to the process of goal setting, which I will discuss in subsequent blogs on 7 steps to prosperity and success. But, I firmly believe that the simple act of writing down your goal can set in motion events that will change your life for the better.

So when setting SMART goals, don’t forget to ask yourself these questions:

  1. Is my goal specific?
  2. Is it realistic?
  • Have I made it actionable?
  1. Have I given a time frame to achieve my goals?

If you’ve answered “Yes” to all 4 questions, you’re on the right track and on your way to creating a powerful goal that will show you the way ahead.

I will take your leave here, but with a small reminder that we’re only in the first leg of our journey. We have a long way to go and I have yet to share 5 more strategies that make up my 7 steps to prosperity.
